How do you find the normal force value in this problem?
At the end of the Giant Drop free fall ride, riders experience a large upward normal force to bring their falling bodies to a stop. Determine the normal force value required to accelerate a 52.1 kg physics student with an upward acceleration of 27.4 m/s/s.
How do you find the answer?
A free body diagram might be helpful in understanding how to solve this problem. Gravity pushes down on the riders; at rest, the normal force would completely balance the force of gravity. However, in this instance, we have a net upward acceleration (and hence, a net upward force). Since the only force in the upward direction is the normal force, we have to conclude that the normal force is stronger than gravity (while they're being accelerated).
Gravity is down, the normal is up; hence, the sum of the forces is F = F_normal - F_gravity = m*a.
Rearranging: F_normal = m*a + F_gravity
Solving: F_normal = 52.1*27.4 + 9.8*52.1 = 1938.12 Newtons.
